When Will Fortnite Save The World Be Free?

Updated: Jul 3, 2019

After the initial release of Fortnite and its Save the World mode, no one could have predicted how far and vast the storm would spread. When a standalone free-to-play Battle Royale mode released two months later, the game went from a reasonably successful co-op sandbox adventure to the hottest online game on the planet, with a most recent monthly player count of 78 million in September 2018. With the stratospheric rise of Fortnite Battle Royale, many fans have also been awaiting the launch of a similarly promised free-to-play offering for Save the World. Unfortunately, Fortnite fans will have to wait a little longer, as the team has confirmed that Save the World will not be free-to-play until 2019, due to further technical and performance work.

It has largely been forgotten amid the battle royale mania, but the Save the World variant of Fortnite is still, technically, in early access. Epic originally promised a full, free-to-play version of the original Fortnite would drop sometime in mid-2018, but obviously, that hasn’t happened yet. Now Epic has officially pushed Save the World’s full release to 2019.

According to Epic, they're working on a "broad set of features, reworks, and backend system improvements"before making Save the World free to play.

U4N is such a marketplace, and you can find various Fortnite Items posted for sale on several platforms.

Since it entered early access development in 2017, Save the World has only been available to those willing to purchase a special "campaign pack", starting at around £32.99. It was originally expected to go free-to-play sometime this year.

However, in its latest State of Development post, Epic explained that it will be postponing the move away from paid early access while it works on "a broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling we believe are needed to go free."

Save the World has grown consistently since our launch in July 2017 and Fortnite overall has experienced unprecedented growth, the developer said. Scaling up for the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is key to providing an excellent experience. This applies to all of our players, old and new, so we're taking the time to get this right."
